Foundation Stage Children will already have learned a great deal by the time they start school. They learn in many different ways, and teachers will plan activities that allow this to develop. Well planned play, both indoors and outdoors is a key way in which young children learn with enjoyment and challenge. In playing, they behave in different ways; sometimes their play will be active and adventurous, sometimes they will describe and discuss what they are doing, sometimes they will be quiet and reflective as they play. Outdoor play is very important to us, from exploring the school environment to taking part in Beach School. Wellies are an important part of YF kit! The Foundation Stage curriculum is built around the unique child. It is underpinned by the ‘Characteristics of Effective Learning’. These are: Playing and Exploring - Active Learning - Creating and thinking critically. The seven areas of learning have been divided into two, the PRIME areas and the SPECIFIC areas.
Every child learns to read and write at Trenance using the widely acclaimed Read Write Inc programme. We teach children through high energy, fast paced and exciting lessons using carefully matched resources and books. This provides a lively, structured and above all rigorous approach to the teaching of phonics, reading and writing as a whole. We are a Model school for Read Write Inc and nationally recognised for our teaching of reading and writing. A case study of our school can be found in the Government publication, ‘Reading by 6 How the best schools do it’.
Kernow English Hub at Trenance Learning Academy
In October 2018, the DfE launched 32 English Hubs at Primary schools across England to support schools to improve the teaching of early language and reading. Each Hub school has been chosen for its track record in excellent teaching and reading - Trenance was selected by the DfE to take on the role of an English Hub. This means that we support schools across Cornwall and Devon, focusing on three areas:
During the academic year 2018/2019 104 schools engaged with us and 67 of these have attended a showcase event. The children love having visitors in school and really shine in their Read Write Inc lessons during observations. We all love reading at Trenance!
At Trenance we believe that everyone can succeed in Mathematics. We know how important good maths teaching is because everything a child learns while they are with us paves the way for future learning. We use White Rose Maths and Big Maths to support our comprehensive teaching. Each unit is broken down into small steps allowing all children to gradually build and develop their understanding on previous knowledge. Mental arithmetic is practiced every day within lessons as well as further opportunities to use mathematics in the afternoons during topic work.
Lessons comprise of teachers directly teaching the class followed by children practicing their maths skills by teaching each other. We work closely with the Maths Hub to support teaching our children Mastery. Mastering maths means acquiring a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject. At any one point in a pupil's journey through school, achieving mastery is taken to mean acquiring a solid enough understanding of the maths that has been taught to enable him/her to move on to more advanced material.
Our Creative Curriculum
At Trenance we offer a very creative curriculum, delivering all of the National Curriculum subjects through topics that stimulate, motivate and interest our children. This is a cross-curricular approach with emphasis on practical experiences for our children. The aim is to develop their ability to apply whatever is learnt to different situations. In addition to this we are proud to be able to incorporate a modern foreign language, Spanish, into our learning.
Children learn best through first-hand experiences and educational visits provide them with this opportunity. Class trips take place frequently and are linked to our curriculum.
Beach School - our extra classroom!
To enhance our Creative Curriculum all pupils at Trenance attend Beach School. Beach School celebrates the coastline that we are lucky enough to live beside. It teaches children the importance of beach safety and supports the work of the RNLI.
