Red Class Teacher, Head of Foundation and Assistant Head of School
Hi, I’m Lara Simmons and I am the teacher in Red class.
I have always lived in Cornwall and grew up on a big farm. I love being outdoors and in my spare time I enjoy taking my dog Betsy for long walks on the beach. I love exploring our beautiful coastline, especially when the sun is shining!
We are starting our year with the topic ‘Ready, Steady Go!’ where we are getting to know the school and settling all the children into Red Class.
Throughout this year we will be learning about;
* Wild and Wonderful weather
* The Magic Train Ride
I truly love teaching as every day is so varied and always exciting! I am proud to teach at Trenance as we all work as a team to inspire every child to learn. I feel privileged to teach children in their very first year at school and see them grow throughout the year.
Yellow Class Teacher
This is my first year teaching at Trenance Learning Academy and I am very excited. Being an Early Years teacher is such a privilege and I look forward to teaching and being with the children everyday. I
Why you got into teaching and why you love it at Trenance Learning Academy.
Trenance Learning Academy is very welcoming and friendly place to be. There is a wonderful atmosphere and everybody helps everyone to learn. I always knew I wanted to teach and can not think of a more rewarding job. Teaching is never dull
Green Class Teacher
My name is Sherry Dodson and I am the teacher in Green Class.
This is my second year of teaching at Trenance and I am so excited!
I have previously been a manager of a Preschool and I have worked in the reception class at Perranporth school for over 10 years.
When I am not having fun and racing around after my nine year old son I enjoy spending time on the beach and socialising with my friends.
I love teaching in the Early Years because every day is different and I enjoy the challenge of motivating young children to learn in a fun and exciting way! I believe that teaching young children is the most rewarding, fun and exciting job in the world.
Purple Class Teacher
Having grown up in Cornwall, I knew that it was the place I wanted to raise my family so having taught in various places in England and abroad I came back to settle here 13 years ago. My husband, boys and dog now live a busy life taking advantage of all the wonderful opportunities that this beautiful county has to offer.
I arrived at Trenance 6 years ago and can’t imagine teaching anywhere else! The atmosphere and energy that is created by nearly 400 under 7’s is unique and very special, I consider myself very lucky to be part of it.
Newly childless as my son has just started a BTec in Engineering at Chichester College, and my daughter is studying BioMed at Durham University, I am making the most of not being a taxi service by walking even more. I hope to spread out on the kitchen table and start sewing again in the winter.
I have a very eclectic taste in music, everything from the Moody Blues to Black Sabbath! My Grandfather was a classical composer, so I have always listened to a wide variety of classical music too. I am not a fan of opera though.
I love books and reading, so will be spending as much time as I can passing that enjoyment on to the children.
I started babysitting in Truro at an early age, and knew from about 12 that I wanted to teach. I started my teaching career on the Isles of Scilly, then moved to the Falkland Islands, where I even taught on the radio and telephone for a while.
I have been at Trenance for nearly 3 years already, and love the atmosphere. There is a real buzz around learning, and the staff and children make sure that buzz keeps going.
Foundation Cover Teacher
Crimson Class Teacher and Head of Y1
Hi I’m Alison Downing and I’m really excited about teaching in Year 1 at Trenance Learning Academy.
I absolutely love my job and have been teaching for 24 years! The best thing about being a teacher is seeing the progress children make and teaching children how to read and write.
When I’m not at school you’ll find me cheering on my boys on the football pitch, watching them surf or walking my dog. I enjoy going to Zumba and going camping and exploring new places. I love going abroad and one of my favourite places is Italy.
This term Year 1’s topic is ‘Deep in the Woods’ and we are going to be outside a lot learning about plants, trees and mini-beasts.
Indigo Class Teacher
My name is Heather and this is my 7th year at Trenance (where has the time gone?!) and my 9th year of teaching. I absolutely love being a teacher as no day is the same and the children's enthusiasm is incredibly infectious! I'm very lucky to work in such a rewarding job.
In my free time, I love to do anything that involves the sea - either being in it, on it or next to it! (One of my favourite terms in Year 1 is the Summer Term where our topic is 'Beach School', as I get to share my passion with the class).
I love sport and play netball for Newquay. I was recently married and have two little girls, Isabella and Holly.
Indigo Class Teacher and Assistant Head of School
I grew up in Cornwall and attended Trenance as a pupil myself!
After university I lived in London and enjoyed pursuing my love of the arts; playing, teaching and working in music. I’ve danced since I was five years old so one of my favourite moments was having the opportunity to perform in a show at the Drury Lane Theatre, Covent Garden.
I’m a massive fan of Strictly Come Dancing and mastering ballroom dancing is next on my wish list!
But nothing beats living in Cornwall; in my spare time I like exploring the diversity, walking and paddle boarding.
Teaching is such a creative and inspiring environment to work in. I find it thoroughly rewarding and it’s wonderful to see the children’s progression throughout the year. I couldn’t think of anything I’d rather do than teach.
Amber Class Teacher
This is my second year at Trenance and I am so excited to be here. I am really looking forward to the journey with the children and see where we all go.
Lime Class Teacher
My name is Jo Jones and I am teaching Year 1. I have been working in Primary Education since 2002.
I have two children Hannah and Lewis who both now live in London after studying at Universities there. Hannah has recently become a doctor! My passion is art I have taken part in many Newquay Carnivals with children from other schools that I have taught, as well as the Festival of Lights in Truro. While living in Vancouver, Canada, I discovered the art and culture of the First Nation people known as 'Haida'.
I enjoy interior design, painting and gardening as well as spending time with Hannah's Pomerian called Bailey!
Aqua Class Teacher
I enjoy being active and making the most of the lovely Cornish coast! I have a fun and bubbly family, and I like to keep busy spending time with my niece and nephew (Izzy and Freddy). This usually involves baking and making lots of mess! I love to cook and bake using interesting and healthy ingredients, and even take part in a family bake off yearly! When I’m not busy baking I will be out and about on coastal walks, doing yoga or reading. I am always listening to music, and I am often found singing along happily! all children and see them make progress.
This year I am excited about our upcoming topic ‘Deep in the Woods’, and I particularly love our school trip where we explore the woods! After Christmas we will be comparing different toys, and we look at old and new toys and their different materials. I look forward to being able to make some special things with Lime Class this year, as I love Art and DT!
I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember, and I even had my very own whiteboard on my bedroom wall as a child! Teaching allows me to find ways to challenge and inspire all children and see them make progress, and this is very rewarding. I love it at Trenance Learning Academy because we are able to provide so many exciting opportunities for our pupils. We also explore Newquay and make the most of our local surroundings which is fantastic. I especially love Beach School in the summer!
Sapphire Class Teacher and Head of Y2
I am Jude Moseley and I am a teacher in Sapphire Class. When I finally find time to myself I enjoy playing the piano and would love to one day compose an all-time Classic! In my spare time I love to get outdoors, walking, cycling and playing tennis. This is why I enjoy teaching at Trenance as a lot of our teaching is connected with the outdoors.
Gold Class Teacher
My name is Louis Keveren and I and the teacher of Gold Class.
I have been teaching for five years and this is my fourth year at Trenance. I love teaching and couldn't think of doing anything else. Every single day at school is an adventure and nothing is ever the same it's a brilliant atmosphere to work in and I look forward to coming to school everyday!
When I'm not at school I have a bit of an odd hobby, I compete and sometimes just complete Obstacle Course Races. The best way to explain it is I play on adult size climbing frames and crawl under barbed wire! It's a brilliant sport to do and I would recommend it to everyone!
Thank you for taking the time to read a little about myself and look forward to seeing you around school.
Ruby Class Teacher
his is my 4th year of teaching at TLA and I love every minute. Every day is different and I enjoy helping children to grow and develop.
It is a great place to work, with fantastic children who have a real energy and excitement to be at school. I have previously taught as a PE teacher in the Middle East as well as teaching post.
When I am not teaching I enjoy spending time with my family, playing with my two boys and playing sport.
Emerald Class Teacher
Hello! My name is Sian Bates and I am the class teacher in Emerald Class.
I have recently moved to Newquay from South Devon and I love living near the sea. Outside of school I am learning to surf and I have joined the local running club.
I have always wanted to be a Primary School Teacher because I love the enthusiasm that the children have and the excitement that they bring to the classroom. Teaching is an extremely rewarding job and there is never a dull moment. In Year 2 for our Topic we will be learning about Voyage and Discovery, Space, Dinosaurs and the Great Outdoors.
Ambassador of Antics
Karl Fice-Thomson is a well-known local character who has been involved in youth development for the best part of a decade.
He actually started work as a Plymouth trawler man but moved to the North Cornish coast in search of surf and adventure. He worked for Rick Stein in Padstow for a few years, before taking a part-time job at the Blue Reef Aquarium in Newquay, working his way up from talk’s supervisor to become an aquarist and finally appointed education officer.
Karl noticed that his enthusiasm for his subject rubbed off on the kids and he started to carve his career path as a teacher. Although he had no formal qualifications he was taken on by Happy Days nurseries as a pre-school teacher. During his time at Happy Days, Karl was instrumental in setting up and running the Pirates Club, which is an educational holiday club for children.
His enthusiasm for youth education and development, earned him the title of Nursery Personality of the Year in 2003, following a nomination from local parents.
This experience then progressed his career to becoming the education officer at the The Adventure Centre. During his time there Karl helped to devise the Junior Baywatch Beach Safety Scheme, which led to his involvement as an RNLI education officer and becoming a lecturer at Cornwall College teaching post 16 students on the Life Programme and Paedeatric First Aid courses.
Karl then went on to lecture at Truro college on the Medics Course and the Surf Science Degree course on Tolcarne Beach.
During this time Karl Created Fistral Rangers and out of this The Beach School was Born.
